Commander Max Farsight

Those alarms continued to blare. He had no clue what they meant. Were they warning the commodore of an uprising? He could only hope. What about Alyssa? Maybe she’d found a way to shrug off her armor, and she was back, brighter and better than ever.

He couldn’t waste time imagining that. He knew it wasn’t the case. He told himself he would’ve felt the moment Alyssa returned to her old power. Maybe it was wishful thinking. Or maybe… it spoke to their growing connection.

One of the good things about now being alone was there was nobody to distract Max. He stared at his hands a few times but preferred to squeeze his eyes closed as he thought of the times they’d communicated mentally.

From what Max knew of the Hand of the Gods incident, Admiral Forest’s nephew, Aaron, had started to develop psychic abilities, too. They’d been the cornerstone of his and Isabel’s victory over the emperor.

Maybe psychic skills came hand-in-hand with having a Hendari crystal inside you? But was Max’s crystal even inside him? If it was located in an easily accessible place, he had to go back to the point that John would’ve already removed it. So where the heck could it be? In his blood? No. His bones? Impossible.

But it had to be somewhere on his body, right?

Though Alyssa had already told him it was impossible, Max could only go back to one thought. The reason he didn’t have access to it was because the crystal didn’t exist at this moment. Yeah, that didn’t make sense, did it? Time didn’t work that way. You didn’t perpetually possess things you’d encountered in the past or the future. You encountered them, then time moved on. They didn’t remain by your side. They certainly didn’t exist in some fancy temporal pocket for you to access when you needed their power.

But… something unusual had to be going on here. Something that required Max to locate the crystal. Because make no mistake, John needed Max.

As for John, whatever was happening to the palace, he didn’t return. Not for a long while. By then, the alarm had stopped. Whatever the disturbance was, it was over.

As soon as John walked in, Max’s back arched with fear and anger.

Max couldn’t even begin to comprehend how much damage John had done. Not just to the Scarax Galaxy, but to the Milky Way. And hell, depending on how long the Observers had existed, John could’ve wreaked havoc across the damn universe. Just who did the Hendari think they were? How important did they judge themselves to be that they assumed they could interfere in the lives of everybody throughout existence? Yes, they’d once been the most powerful force. But no, that didn’t give them the right to destroy everything in their paths and to do as they saw fit.

John stopped in the middle of the room. He was still a hologram. Max could tell that because he stood proudly over those channels of temporal light.

No more guards had come in with reinforced buckets, overflowing with that stuff.
